Waqar, Murali take on coaching roles with Bengal

Waqar Younis grimaces as Pakistan collapse, New Zealand v Pakistan, 1st ODI, Westpac Stadium, Wellington, January 22, 2011

Waqar Younis and Muttiah Muralitharan have been appointed pace and spin bowling consultants respectively for Bengal, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) confirmed after its working committee meeting on Monday. The two have signed three-year contracts with the CAB and will begin working with the players in a four-day camp starting March 15.

Waqar and Murali were recommended by the former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Ranadeb Bose, the former Bengal seamer, will assist Waqar but Murali's assistant is yet to be appointed, after the former left-arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee ruled himself out. Ganguly will coach the batsmen and will be assisted by Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra, Goutam Shome (Jr) and Bengal Under-25 coach Joydeep Mukherjee.
"Everything has been passed. There's confusion over who would be the assistant spin coach," Ganguly was quoted in the Telegraph. "Nonetheless, it'll just be simple cricket coaching with Waqar and Murali and no rocket science.
"

The cricketers will be picked from a screening camp. The first phase, beginning from March 15, will consist of 200 players. It will be for 30-35 days under Waqar and Murali, but local coaches will hold the camp throughout the year. The batting clinic will be held separately. I will be available (after the World T20), so we can do it at an appropriate time."
Waqar, the former Pakistan fast bowler, had coached Pakistan before stepping down in September 2011. He joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as a bowling consultant for the 2013 IPL season. Muralitharan, the former Sri Lanka offspinner who's still actively playing in T20 leagues around the world, was appointed as Sri Lanka's spin consultant in February 2013 but only in an advisory capacity.

PCB likely to back ICC revamp

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to back the ICC revamp at the world governing body's board meeting next month to give it leverage with other countries, especially India. The PCB is aware, ESPNcricinfo understands, that a pragmatic approach will give it the benefits of bilateral tours it needs in its current situation, while not signing it will increase the sense of isolation.
The PCB is the only Full Member to have not extended its support as yet to the governance, finance and FTP changes in the ICC, which were proposed by the BCCI, the ECB and Cricket Australia in February. When the changes, which increase the power of those three boards within the ICC, were first proposed, four Full Members had come out against them: the PCB, the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The proposals have since been revised and were approved by eight of the Full Members on February 8. SLC and the PCB were the only two to vote against it at that meeting, and SLC extended its support to the revamp 10 days later.
The PCB's previous chairman Zaka Ashraf believed the revamp was against the principle of "equality", and so the PCB, under, Ashraf objected to it. Current chairman Najam Sethi, though, who has been exchanging the reins of the PCB with Ashraf frequently over the past few months due tolegal and political reasons, said it was important to "safeguard" Pakistan's interests.
"I don't think this is about principles, it is about safeguarding our own self-interests in the long run in world cricket," Sethi said. "We are the only ones now, left alone [against the revamp]. Whomever I have spoken to says they also initially opposed the changes but later went with it because they were gaining a lot by supporting these changes."
Sethi reportedly met with his Bangladesh and Sri Lanka counterparts, on the sidelines of Asia Cup, in Dhaka.
The PCB is keen on negotiating bilateral series with India. "The fact is every country wants to play India because they say it brings them much needed revenues. It is a fact that not playing cricket with India is damaging for us," Sethi said.
Ashraf, however, maintained that the revamp would be unjust to the other members. According to him, the PCB - given Pakistan's commercial value to world cricket - was offered the chance to side with the 'Big Three' and benefit from the original proposals.
"The situation is very tricky," Ashraf told ESPNcricinfo. "The PCB obviously will be the last country [to accept the revamp], but that doesn't make any difference. The restructuring is still against the basic principle of equality and the 'Big Three' will be acting despotically.
"The [revised] financial model is based on merely theory and a dummy model [by which no Full Member loses] is shown with a verbal assurance that they won't let the things slip. They promised that every board would get its fair share according to their commercial value. They also asked us to be the part of the scheme, to make it Big Four, as Pakistan holds a productive commercial value."
"The revamped ICC model is bound to fail in the long run," Ashraf said. "Their bid is to control things and that is what the whole idea was, but there is no indemnity if the structure collapses. And I am afraid the way cricket is being treated, the structure won't sustain itself in the long run and in the next three years board members, especially the supporters, will start realising this and things will start splitting."
Pakistan have not hosted any Full Member at home since the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore five years ago. Despite that, the PCB has been functioning rather well and that shows "the value" of Pakistan cricket, Ashraf said. "Pakistan, in last few years, despite being isolated are still standing tall and the PCB is not in debt as many boards are. No board is ready to help Pakistan at a crucial time to revive cricket in Pakistan. But Pakistan cricket is still going strong.
"The world knows the value of Pakistan cricket and this is what keeps us going. Despite the isolation, cricket in Pakistan still a profitable product."
Currently, Sethi is discussing the matter of the revamp with previous chairmen of the board, including Ashraf, seeking their advice on what he has termed a "crisis". It is understood that all of these former chiefs have suggested Pakistan remain in opposition to the revamp.

Sammy seals series for West Indies

West Indies outmuscled England to win the T20 series 2-0 with one to play courtesy of a five-wicket win with seven balls to spare at Kensington Oval. England worked hard to hang in the game, especially with the ball, but West Indies struck 11 sixes to England's six and ultimately their extra power proved impossible to contain.

The big beast, Chris Gayle, who only a few days ago had been wondering about the state of his glutes, commandeered West Indies' innings with five gluteus maximuses, three of them flying onto the roof of the stands and out of the ground. James Tredwell risked a cricked neck as he watched three sail skywards, but still only conceded 27: the West Indies, did not bother themselves with too many singles.
But Ravi Bopara, at his most sagacious with the ball, turned in a commendable spell, 10 runs conceded from four overs of devil's confetti to equal England's most economical full spell in T20. He had Gayle outwitted, chopping on for 36 from 30 balls. West Indies, having patted Bopara back with no sense of urgency, had seven wickets intact and 37 to get from four overs, but the immensity of the task suddenly dawned on them when Tim Bresnan dismissed Marlon Samuels and Andre Russell to leg-side catches in successive balls.
The final fusillade came from Darren Sammy, an unbeaten 30 from only nine balls with the rope cleared three times: so much for a tricky target of 31 from the last three overs. "Good momentum… we're looking good," said Sammy. Nobody could question that. He mullered some attempted yorkers from Jade Dernbach and Bresnan over the ropes and he will go to Bangladesh as a captain content about his own game.

Pakistan morale lifted by India win - Misbah

Shahid Afridi is mobbed by his team-mates, India v Pakistan, Asia Cup, Mirpur, March 2, 2014

While losing the Asia Cup final was a disappointment, Pakistan could take 'a lot of positives' from the tournament, captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said. Among them, was the 'morale-boosting' win against India in the round-robin stage, a victory which meant the team got a warm welcome at the Lahore airport on arrival, being showered with rose petals despite not bringing back the trophy.
"Losing the final was a disappointment, but overall it was a very good tournament and we move on with a lot of positives," Misbah said. "I think the team put in a lot of hard work, the way we won matches. As a team the performance was terrific, but at the same time no doubt it is disappointing that we didn't win the tournament.
The match against India, Misbah said, put Pakistan in the right frame of mind for the World Twenty20. "Winning against India was important because people have a lot of expectations and have lots of interest in it. With such performances, the morale of the team is very good. In this condition, we definitely have a chance [at the World T20]."
Misbah did not take questions on his "slow" batting in the final against Sri Lanka lightly, cutting off one reporter mid-way through his question by saying: "When you are 18 for 3, even big teams also bat like we did in the final to recover."
Pakistan had lost their top three by the fourth over of the game, before Mishah and Fawad Alam were involved in a 122-run stand. Misbah made 65 off 98 balls before being dismissed, while Alam went on to remain 114 not out off 134. Pakistan reached 260 for 5, before Sri Lanka eased home with close to four overs to spare after taking a toll on Pakistan's pacers.
Misbah defended his fast bowlers, saying that the spin- and batting-friendly pitches of the subcontinent made life tough for the pacers. "It wasn't an easy tour, especially for fast bowlers. You know in Asian conditions, it's difficult for fast bowlers.
"Overall if you look, barring one or two bowlers, fast bowlers struggled. Conditions are conducive for spin bowlers and it doesn't help fast bowlers.
