2022 Pakistan Super League is the seventh season of the Pakistan Super League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league which was established by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2015. The league began on 27 January 2022, with the final scheduled to take place on 27 February.

Pakistan hands over captured pilot Abhinandan Varthaman to India

Pakistan has handed over a captured pilot to Indianauthorities at the Wagah border, a move aimed at de-escalating tensions after days of hostilities between the South Asian neighbours.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman crossed the Wagah-Attari border at around 9pm local time (1600 GMT) on Friday, hours later than expected and sporting a black eye from his ordeal.
His release came two days after he was captured following a rare aerial engagement between the nuclear-armed rivals over the disputed region of Kashmir, divided between the two countries since 1947.
A press statement by Pakistan's foreign ministry said Varthaman has been returned to India and that he was treated "with dignity" during his custody.
"While in captivity, he was treated with dignity and in line with international law. Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr Imran Khan announced his return as a goodwill gesture aimed at de-escalating rising tensions with India," said the statement.
On Thursday, Khan had announced his decision to return Varthaman back to India as a "peace gesture" during a joint sitting of the parliament in capital, Islamabad.
In a tweet, Khan's Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, welcomed the pilot home, saying "the nation is proud of his exemplary courage

Yuvraj Singh's search for form
Yuvraj Singh is making his third comeback since recovering from cancer, but with the breakneck and pressure-filled T20 being the only format he has to make a case for a permanent place, he has looked woefully short of confidence
As Suresh Raina hit the winning run off Marlon Samuels, the Indian dug-out hugged and high-fived their successive win in the World T20.There was celebratory joy, but there was also a hint of relief, for India had taken a simple chase to the final over. As MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli clasped hands,Yuvraj Singh walked out. He had just taken off his gear but still wore a part disenchanted, part blank look; his eyes distant, and in sharp contrast to the jubilation around him.Yuvraj had walked in with 23 needed off 32, consumed 19 of those for his 10 runs and had fallen dabbing a turner straight to slip. One ball later Raina ended the match.
Against Pakistan, he missed a full delivery and was bowled second ball. In both matches, he put down what could have been costly misses - Chris Gayle and Mohammad Hafeez - but India created and converted more chances soon after. His solitary over in the tournament so far went for 13.
Cricket is a game that lends itself easily to analysis, and unfortunately, to over-analysis as well. India are only two games into their campaign in a format where often, any analysis can be over-analysis. It is readily possible to argue in Yuvraj's favour: Anyone can miss a full and straight one early in his innings, especially in the T20 format which requires heavy hitting.
Yuvraj might only have wanted some time in the middle, knowing that India had plenty of deliveries left to put West Indies away, and aware that such an opportunity rarely comes in T20s. Already, many other players have spilled high catches in Mirpur, and there could be a larger reason for it. The height and positioning of the floodlights is being talked about as a possible factor. And for all his deeds with the ball in the past, Yuvraj is and has always been a part-time bowler, and it was only one over anyway.
It is the sum of all these instances, though, that invites concern. This is already Yuvraj's third comeback (of sorts) since recovering from cancer. The first time he was rushed into the 2012 World T20 having played very little competitive cricket and seemed lacking in match fitness. The second comeback also started in the shortest format, with a much leaner Yuvraj carving a match-winning, unbeaten 77 off 35 against Australia in Rajkot in October last year, before struggling in the one-dayers. The third comeback is not strict in definition, for India didn't played any T20s between the Rajkot one and the World T20.
In both the previous phases, Yuvraj has lost his place in one format each. He hasn't played a Test since December 2012, and an ODI since December 2013, missing the tour of New Zealand and the Asia Cup.

At the moment, T20 is the only format he has to make his case and it can be misleading for watchers to take cues from. It can also be ruthless on the player, with everything happening so fast, leaving little time to gather your thoughts. Even more so, considering it is a world event.
With bat, ball, on the field, even in the nets, Yuvraj has just not looked comfortable. The confidence does not seem to be there. It shows in the way he has looked forlorn on the boundary after those drops instead of showing some anger or disappointment. He knows, and the world knows, there is so much riding for him on this World T20. Maybe it is the pressure of that knowledge, that this is all he has left for now, at the international stage at least, that is shackling him down.
As any captain would, MS Dhoni backed his senior player after the West Indies match. "Yuvraj is the best player in T20s. Right now he is not in that good a rhythm you can say. It is a bit tough, he has been dropped from ODIs and is coming back in T20s, there is a bit of pressure on the individual. You can say it is a short format and you can go in and express yourself, but when an individual comes into the team, there is some pressure on him.
"It takes one-two matches but we are only hoping if he gets a good flow, a good game, we all know the kind of match-winner he is and he can really turn the game around on his own," Dhoni said. "I am glad he got a bit of time because it will only settle his nerves. We all know how dangerous he can be once he gets going, he will give many more victories. If Yuvi comes back, if he bats really well, he is a good asset to have a No 4."
India can arguably afford to give Yuvraj one more match in the tournament. It should ideally help that their next one is against Bangladesh and not Australia. They will be relieved if Yuvraj comes good in that. If not, they will be in a quandary against Australia. They look good to make the semi-final, and would not want to go in with a short-on-confidence Yuvraj or a short-on-match-practice Ajinkya Rahane.

India Beat Pakistan by 7 wickets
You don't often know what to expect in big India-Pakistan matches, but Pakistan are on to a disturbing trend of predictability of late. They work themselves up into a frenzy, try too many things, make too many mistakes, and India coolly stand in a corner doing little things right and stroll their way to a win. In the previous World T20 match between these two sides, Pakistan batted in a similarly nervous manner, got bowled out for 128, and lost despite a valiant attempt with the ball. Here they managed two runs more, succumbing to their own poor running and some clever spin bowling by India - in their 12 overs, the three specialists went for 63 and took three wickets - before putting up a fight with the ball, which was too little and too short.
Even in the lead-up, MS Dhoni spoke about how he was pleased a lot of acrimony had gone out of India-Pakistan matches, Mohammad Hafeez on the other hand sounded combative when asked about the lack of wins against India in World Cups. India were clear in their heads: they played three spinners, and didn't want to take a chance with the dew, so they put Pakistan in. Pakistan were a bundle of nerves.
Ahmed Shehzad ran out Kamran Akmal, who looked in good touch with his two early boundaries, before almost running himself out. With no loose balls on offer, Hafeez and Shehzad got more and more anxious before throwing their wickets away to Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra in the eighth and the ninth overs. It is a minor surprise that Mishra was only in his second Twenty20 international, but he bowled like a grizzled veteran for the most part. The delivery to get Shehzad was a beauty: for the batsman on the edge, he slowed a legbreak down, got some drift and dip, and drew as comprehensive a stumping as any you will see.
From 47 for 3 in the ninth over, Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik - the latter has feasted on Indian bowling in the past - tried a revival with a 50-run stand in seven overs, but the knowledge that a strong India batting lineup would need a total in excess of 150 to be challenged meant the percentages were always low. India again offered nothing loose, and Malik fell when trying to go inside-out off Mishra's bowling. He was beaten in the flight, the ball turned, and took a thick outside edge for long-off to catch.
What would have please India was that even in the last three overs - with the spinners' quotas exhausted - India conceded just 28 runs. The pitch was not the easiest to bat on, with good bounce and turn on offer, which would have actually left Pakistan a little more annoyed with their effort. About 15 more runs and their bowlers would have put India under serious pressure, especially with Shikhar Dhawan struggling at the top. Somehow, though, Dhawan scored 30 of possibly his most ungainly runs before falling. Rohit Sharma, who looked much better than Dhawan, managed 24 at a marginally better strike rate. Be that as it may, the two had given India a start, and despite a wobble in the middle Virat Kohli - in the company of Suresh Raina - did what he can do even in his sleep.
The only disturbing aspect of India's evening came through in this wobble: Yuvraj Singh had dropped a catch, conceded 13 in one over, and capped it off with a poor shot to be bowled for 1. That left India needing 66 in the remaining 9.5 overs, a situation that needs some panic from batsmen for some interest to be manufactured. No panic was forthcoming from Kohli, and once Shahid Afridi dropped Suresh Raina on 7 it was a cruise for India.
The key aspect of the finish provided by Kohli and Raina was how coolly they played Saeed Ajmal. Ajmal's analysis is worth a look: he was hit for three fours that Dhawan was not in control of, but still went for 18 runs and took one wicket in his four overs. UAE to host 20 IPL games in first phase
The first phase of the IPL will have 20 matches in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi
and Dubai from April 16-30, the organisers have announced. The opening
match of IPL 2014 will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu
Dhabi on April 16 between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.
It is understood the tournament launch will take place on April 15 in
Abu Dhabi. According to the schedule released by the IPL, five of the 15
days of the first phase will be double-headers that will be played over
the weekends. The first match will start at 2.30pm local time (1030
GMT, 1600 IST) and the evening game at 6.30pm (1430 GMT, 2000 IST).
The schedule was chalked out to allow each of the eight franchises to
play at least once in all three cities, and also feature in at least one
of the double-header weekends. Abu Dhabi and Dubai will host seven
matches each while six games will be played in Sharjah.
The IPL was moved to an alternative venue after its schedule coincided
with the Indian elections, slated to be held between April 17 and May
12, giving rise to security issues. While the primary objective of the
IPL was to host the most number of matches in India, the Indian home
ministry made it clear it would not be possible to provide the required
security for the tournament during the elections.
However, a BCCI statement said that state administrations had responded
to an initiative by the federal government and indicated their
willingness to hold matches. This, the BCCI said, led it to believe that
the IPL could be staged in India from the first week of May.
There were concerns about Sharjah as a venue, given its associations with match-fixing in the past, but assurances
from the UAE government and cricket officials in the country were
adequate for the BCCI to believe that the tournament could be conducted
in a corruption-free manner.

Waqar, Murali take on coaching roles with Bengal
Waqar Younis and Muttiah Muralitharan
have been appointed pace and spin bowling consultants respectively for
Bengal, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) confirmed after its
working committee meeting on Monday. The two have signed three-year
contracts with the CAB and will begin working with the players in a
four-day camp starting March 15.
Waqar and Murali were recommended by the former India captain Sourav
Ganguly. Ranadeb Bose, the former Bengal seamer, will assist Waqar but
Murali's assistant is yet to be appointed, after the former left-arm
spinner Utpal Chatterjee ruled himself out. Ganguly will coach the
batsmen and will be assisted by Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra, Goutam
Shome (Jr) and Bengal Under-25 coach Joydeep Mukherjee.
"Everything has been passed. There's confusion over who would be the assistant spin coach," Ganguly was quoted in the Telegraph. "Nonetheless, it'll just be simple cricket coaching with Waqar and Murali and no rocket science.
"
The cricketers will be picked from a screening camp. The first phase,
beginning from March 15, will consist of 200 players. It will be for
30-35 days under Waqar and Murali, but local coaches will hold the camp
throughout the year. The batting clinic will be held separately. I will
be available (after the World T20), so we can do it at an appropriate
time."
Waqar, the former Pakistan fast bowler, had coached Pakistan before
stepping down in September 2011. He joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as a
bowling consultant for the 2013 IPL season. Muralitharan, the former Sri
Lanka offspinner who's still actively playing in T20 leagues around the
world, was appointed as Sri Lanka's spin consultant in February 2013
but only in an advisory capacity.

Pakistan morale lifted by India win - Misbah
While losing the Asia Cup final was a disappointment, Pakistan could take 'a lot of positives' from the tournament, captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said. Among them, was the 'morale-boosting' win against India
in the round-robin stage, a victory which meant the team got a warm
welcome at the Lahore airport on arrival, being showered with rose
petals despite not bringing back the trophy.
"Losing the final was a disappointment, but overall it was a very good
tournament and we move on with a lot of positives," Misbah said. "I
think the team put in a lot of hard work, the way we won matches. As a
team the performance was terrific, but at the same time no doubt it is
disappointing that we didn't win the tournament.
The match against India, Misbah said, put Pakistan in the right frame of
mind for the World Twenty20. "Winning against India was important
because people have a lot of expectations and have lots of interest in
it. With such performances, the morale of the team is very good. In this
condition, we definitely have a chance [at the World T20]."
Misbah did not take questions on his "slow" batting in the final against
Sri Lanka lightly, cutting off one reporter mid-way through his
question by saying: "When you are 18 for 3, even big teams also bat like
we did in the final to recover."
Pakistan had lost their top three by the fourth over of the game, before
Mishah and Fawad Alam were involved in a 122-run stand. Misbah made 65
off 98 balls before being dismissed, while Alam went on to remain 114
not out off 134. Pakistan reached 260 for 5, before Sri Lanka eased home
with close to four overs to spare after taking a toll on Pakistan's
pacers.
Misbah defended his fast bowlers, saying that the spin- and
batting-friendly pitches of the subcontinent made life tough for the
pacers. "It wasn't an easy tour, especially for fast bowlers. You know
in Asian conditions, it's difficult for fast bowlers.
"Overall if you look, barring one or two bowlers, fast bowlers
struggled. Conditions are conducive for spin bowlers and it doesn't help
fast bowlers.

Manzoor ton breaks top-order drought
Usually, a couple of hours into a Pakistan Test innings, Younis Khan is in the middle trying to rescue the team after the top order has floundered. In Abu Dhabi, he was relaxing in the pavilion, fiddling around with a camera while chatting with Junaid Khan. He could afford to joke around as Pakistan's new opening pair, Khurram Manzoor and Shan Masood, put on 135 runs, Pakistan's first century stand for the first wicket since January 2012, back when they were making a mockery of England's No. 1 ranking.
It is much too soon to talk of them making a mockery of the current No. 1
side in the world, but Pakistan's sixth opening combination in seven
Tests put them on course for a healthy first-innings side. Manzoor went
on to his maiden Test century, the first by a Pakistan opener against
South Africa in a decade, to heap the pressure on Graeme Smith's side.
Manzoor is only playing his 10th Test, spread over more than four years,
but was already deemed the senior opener in the squad, after Mohammad
Hafeez was axed. He is fresh off twin half-centuries in his previous
Test, and though he had a few nervy moments early on, he didn't throw
away his wicket. He was generally watchful against the quicks, wearing a
blow on his ribs from Jacques Kallis, and only opened out just before
lunch when the spinners came on, taking three boundaries in two overs.
What stood out as much as his crisp strokeplay and concentration was his
desire to get a big score. He regularly chided himself when he played a
loose shot, even knocking his helmet with his bat several times after
chasing a wide one from Vernon Philander and nearly nicking it when on
90. It was a bit of struggle for him around that time, scoring only one
run in 24 deliveries. Just as the pressure was mounting on him, he broke
free with consecutive boundaries off Robin Peterson. The century
arrived soon after with a push towards cover for two, celebrating in a
chest-thumpingly exuberant manner.
His combativeness was also on display late in the day, when a wicketless
Dale Steyn charged in with the second new ball. When Steyn flung the
ball at him after fielding it, Manzoor didn't back down, snapping back
at the world's No. 1 bowler. Later in the over when Steyn glared after a
quick delivery, Manzoor blew him a kiss.
Kolkata, Mumbai get West Indies Tests
Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will host
India's two Tests against West Indies in November, which will mark the
end of Sachin Tendulkar's 24-year career. While Eden Gardens will host
the first Test from November 6 to 10, Tendulkar's farewell Test will be
played at his home ground from November 14 to 18. The decision was taken
during the BCCI's tour programme and fixtures committee meeting in
Mumbai on Tuesday.
While the first two ODIs of the tour will be played at Kochi (November
21) and Visakhapatnam (November 24), either Baroda or Kanpur will stage
the last match of the series on November 27. Barabati Stadium in Cuttack
will host the visitors' preparations prior to the series, including a
three-day game to be played from October 31 to November 2.
Once Tendulkar had requested
the BCCI to play his last competitive game at his home ground, the
decision with regard to his farewell Test - also his 200th - was a mere
formality at the meeting of the committee headed by BCCI vice-president
Rajiv Shukla. As a result, the Cricket Association of Bengal, which had
been promised Tendulkar's 200th before he announced his decision to
retire after the Test, was awarded with Tendulkar's penultimate Test.
The series against West Indies wasn't scheduled on the FTP. When it was announced
in September, it raised doubts over the schedule and duration India's
tour to South Africa, and whether the series would be Tendulkar's last.
Tendulkar confirmed that it would indeed be his farewell series last week.
As for the doubt over the venue for the third ODI, the Baroda Cricket
Association, the home turf of BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel, was allotted
the match as per the BCCI's rotation policy. If the Reliance ground,
which usually stages all the ODIs in Vadodara but does not belong to the
association, is available, then the match will not be shifted to
Kanpur, the home of Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association that Shukla is in
charge of.
